Nigerian Energy Market

Electricity demand in Nigeria far outstrips supply. Nigeria has a population in excess of 150 million people and currently generates approximately 3,800 MW of electricity with very high levels of suppressed demand in excess of 10,000 MW.

Compared to smaller economies such as Algeria with 11,000 MW of capacity or comparably sized economies such as Egypt with 24,000 MW of capacity, Nigeria trails far behind, with estimates of available generation capacity of between 3,000 to 4,000 MW; and about 7,500 MW of installed grid capacity.

Nigeria’s electricity consumption on a per capita basis is among the lowest in the world. More than half of the population has no connection to the grid whatsoever, relying

Solar Powered Communications Tower

Mobile communications is one of the fastest growing sectors of the Nigerian economy. From a standing start in 2001, the national network now supports over 60 million mobile subscribers.

To sustain this growth in communications, mobile operators and associated infrastructure companies in Nigeria, are building national networks of Comms Towers, visible throughout the county.

The electric power needed for these Towers is usually produced by diesel generators. Generators have to be purchased, maintained and fuelled on a regular basis. This method of power generation is expensive, environmentally invasive and diesel is prone to theft.
